Bharati Mukherjee, an Indian-born American novelist, is a familiar voice in the Indian Diaspora. Diaspora in itself is a very wide concept, it aims at examining the loss that has occurred, the gain that has been accumulated acceptance and refusals suffered and an everlasting struggle to prove identity there, and to preserve the lost contact. Identity is the core issue in any exploration of Diaspora. The actual problem of nation and identity emerges when a person finds himself nowhere, even amid the ocean of human beings. He fails to disconnect himself from his original root and equally fails to implant himself in the land of new culture.
