Abstract

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is the apex body in Athletics in India and is responsible for conducting Competitions in the country. It was earlier called as Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI). It is associated with both Asian Athletics Association (AAA) and International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Athletics in India has a history which dates back to the Vedic period and it can be said that the principles of the Atharva Veda gave shape to the formation of Indian athletics. Nevertheless it is indeed a mystery as to when exactly athletics in India made its presence felt as a distinct sports form.
