Abstract
A variety of learning institutions were developed in many cultures to provide institutional framework for scholarly activities. During early medieval period in north India we find the transformation of traditional gurukulas or aashramas into mathas, agraharas, temple and state sponsored universities. Such notable institutions flourished all over the north India during the period in which education was imparted to the students of India and abroad. These education centres flourished in Kashmir, Bihar, Orissa, Gujrat, Bundelkhand, Rajputana, etc. in northern India; which declined in the later phase of twelfth and thirteen century as a consequence of muslim invasions.
